See Robert M. Reilly Papers John Miles was born in 1752 in England, died in 1808 in Philadelphia. About 1790 he arrived in the United States and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was working at the US government arsenal in New London, Virginia from 1794 to 1796. Then he opened his own gun making business in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. He made all sorts of small arms including edged weapons. .74 caliber smoothbore, flintlock, 44" round barrel (Pennsylvania Contract Musket) marked "MILES/CP" at the lockplate. right side .69 caliber smoothmore, flintlock, 9 3/4round barrel, marked "MILES PHIL" at the lockplate. right side US records espesially John Harris Receipt Book stipulate that John Miles assembled and fitted from Government Parts: August 16, 1797 - 50 Ship Pistols September 8, 1797 - 50 Ship Pistols November 10, 1797 - 50 Ship Pistols April 9, 1798 - 2 Ship Pistols October 16, 1798 - 100 Horseman's Pistols December 23, 1798 - 100 Horseman's Pistols |
